The 4 Parts of Your Wedding Ceremony Music (A Simple Guide)

When people think about wedding ceremony music, they usually think about the aisle. And understandably so - it’s one of the biggest moments of the day.

But in reality, there are four key parts to your wedding ceremony where music plays an important role. Getting these right helps everything feel calm, natural, and well-paced from start to finish.

I’ve played at weddings across Berkshire, Hampshire and London, as well as Bristol and Bath, and I’ve seen just how much of a difference a well-planned ceremony soundtrack can make.

1. Guest Arrival (Prelude)

Your wedding music actually starts before the ceremony begins.

As your guests arrive and take their seats, having live piano music gently in the background helps set the tone straight away. It fills the space, avoids any silence, and creates a relaxed atmosphere as people settle in.

For this part, I usually play a mix of modern classical and light contemporary pieces. Think Ludovico Einaudi-style piano or simple, familiar melodies played in a softer way.

2. The Aisle (Processional)

This is the moment everyone thinks about - the aisle song.

Whether you’ve chosen something classical, a film soundtrack, or a Bridgerton-style arrangement of a song you love, the most important thing here is timing. Your wedding pianist will watch your pace and adjust the music so everything feels natural as you walk.

It should never feel rushed or too slow - just comfortable.

3. Signing of the Register

Once the ceremony is underway, there is usually a short period where you’ll be signing the register.

This is often overlooked, but it’s actually a really lovely moment to include music. It keeps the atmosphere going while your guests are seated and photos are taken, giving a natural flow to the ceremony.

I usually recommend two or three pieces here that feel slightly lighter, but still in keeping with the tone of the day.

4. The Exit (Recessional)

This is the moment you walk back down the aisle together.

The music here should feel uplifting and celebratory. It’s the first moment where everything relaxes slightly, and you can really enjoy it.

One thing I always suggest is choosing a song with a recognisable lift or chorus. That way, as soon as you turn and start walking, the music supports that sense of excitement.
