What Songs Should a Wedding Pianist Play? (A Simple Guide)
One of the most common questions I get is: what should a wedding pianist actually play?
It’s a fair question. Once you’ve decided you’d like live piano at your wedding, the next step is working out what that actually sounds like across the day.
The good news is, it doesn’t need to be complicated. The best approach is to think about how the music fits into each part of your wedding, rather than trying to build one long playlist.
The Ceremony
For the ceremony, the music is much more intentional.
This is where your key songs sit:
your aisle song
music during the signing
your exit song
For the aisle, this is usually something personal. It could be a Ludovico Einaudi piece, a film soundtrack, or a Bridgerton-style version of a song you both love.
During the signing, I usually play two or three pieces that keep the atmosphere going while everything happens naturally in the background.
For the exit, this is your moment to lift the energy slightly. Something with a bit of movement or a recognisable melody works really well here.
The Drinks Reception
This is where things become a bit more relaxed.
Your wedding pianist will usually move into a mix of styles that work as background music while your guests are chatting and enjoying themselves.
This might include:
modern classical pieces
light pop covers
film and TV soundtracks
well-known melodies arranged for piano
The aim here is not to draw too much attention, but to create a consistent, elegant atmosphere throughout your wedding reception.
Do You Need to Choose Every Song?
This is something a lot of couples worry about.
The honest answer is no - you don’t need to choose everything.
Most professional wedding pianists will already have a set list that they know works well across different parts of the day. I usually recommend that couples focus on the key moments (especially the aisle), and then allow a bit of flexibility for the rest.
That way, everything still feels personal without becoming overwhelming.
Can You Request Specific Songs?
Of course.
If there are one or two songs that really matter to you, I will always do my best to include them. Even if the original version doesn’t have piano, it can usually be arranged in a way that fits naturally into your ceremony or reception.
This is often where the most memorable moments come from.
Keeping It Consistent
One of the most important things is that the music feels consistent across the day.
Moving between styles too dramatically can feel slightly disjointed, so I always aim to keep a similar tone throughout - whether that’s modern classical, soft contemporary, or something slightly more cinematic.
It just helps everything feel joined together.
A Simple Way to Think About It
If you’re unsure, this is a simple way to approach it:
Choose one meaningful aisle song
Choose a slightly more uplifting exit song
Let your pianist guide the rest
That’s usually more than enough to create a really lovely atmosphere.
