This one took a long time. And I mean that in the best possible way.
rest. volume 5 was written for summer - but not summer in a loud, busy way. For those quieter moments inside it.
I'm talking about a Sunday at home in the middle of June with the back doors open. That early dog walk at half six before it gets too warm. An evening in with your other half, no plans, nowhere to be. A pub lunch by a canal. A day out with people you really love. For me, those moments are the greatest form of rest there is - and that's exactly what this EP was written for.
There's also something about summer and romance that felt really important to this release. Summer has a way of reminding you of those feelings - whatever age you are - of getting to know someone, of being in love, of all those small magical moments you somehow forget about until they happen again. That warmth, that softness, that feeling of life being genuinely good. I wanted this music to hold that.
The tracks
Pivoine - track one - was written for those beautiful early mornings. The ones where you're up before the heat arrives, walking in the quiet before the day begins. To me it's a summer landscape in a song. That's the simplest way I can put it.
New Colours was written about that fresh start feeling that summer brings. The new confidence, the brightness, the way everyone seems to lift a little when the sun comes out properly. That's what new colours means to me.
Waltz Romantique is one I'd had for a long time. It kept coming back to me, no matter what I was doing - and every time it did, it reminded me of those summer romantic moments. The dog walks, the meals out, the evenings in. The simple, lovely feeling of being with someone or something you adore.
I've never worked this hard on a release or for this long. And whilst I wrote it for you - for those moments where you need something calm and warm in the background - it honestly brought me just as much rest in the making of it. When I was writing, I had to put myself in summer. And that meant that when the first properly warm day arrived this year, I felt ready for it. I made the most of it.
I hope volume 5 brings you some of that too - wherever you are, whatever your summer looks like.
