why rest?

I didn't sit down one day and decide to build a music brand. It genuinely just evolved. And the more I look back on it, the more it feels like the universe was actually telling me to rest - because at the time, I really wasn't.

I'm a workaholic. I run Private Piano Tuition UK, I teach, I perform, I compose - music has always been everything. And for years, at least half the nights of the week, I just couldn't sleep. No matter how tired I was, I couldn't switch off. So looking back, maybe rest. was always meant to happen.

During lockdown, like everyone, things just stopped. No performances, no events, the school was closed. I had time I didn't really know what to do with. I'd always been quietly recording bits and pieces on my laptop - nothing serious, just for me. So I finished one, and I released it. Was it perfect? No. The production was rough, and I didn’t know how to mix and master anything if I'm honest. But it was out there, and that felt like something.

About a year later, I was checking my accounts and noticed a fairly decent amount of money had come in that I wasn't expecting. It was a royalty payment - and when I dug into it, I discovered that one of my pieces had ended up on BBC Sounds sleep playlists and had picked up a large amount of streams.

Quietly, without me knowing, people had been using my music to fall asleep.

And here's the part that really stayed with me. At that exact point in time, my insomnia was at its absolute worst. I'd struggled with sleep since my mid twenties - seen doctors, tried everything. During lockdown it was as bad as it had ever been. Night after night, no matter how tired I was, I just couldn't switch off.

And while all of that was happening, my music was helping strangers do the one thing I couldn't do for myself.

I found that really significant. I couldn't quite explain it, but I knew I wanted to do something with it. Could I build a project around this? Something that used my music, but that genuinely meant something to people - and if I'm honest, to me as well?

The name came from a moment in a lesson. I was teaching one afternoon and looked down at a theory book and saw a crotchet rest sitting on the stave. Something about it really caught me - the simplicity of it, the stillness. I thought there could be something there. I played around with the crotchet as a logo for a while, and I just didn't love it. And then it came to me - why not just… rest?

It made perfect sense. One word. Lowercase, because lowercase feels softer and quieter, like the word is actually doing what it says. And the full stop at the end, to give it a quiet confidence. rest.

That's honestly how the whole thing started.

What I think people don't always realise about me is that rest doesn't come naturally to me at all. I run a school, I teach, I perform, I release music, I mentor students who are preparing for exams, performances, and careers in music. So rest. is as much a reminder to myself as anything else - that rest is a rhythm, not a reward. It's not something you earn at the end of a long day. It's something you build in.

The music is released in seasons - each volume tied to a time of year, because that's always felt right to me. An autumn release feels completely different to a summer one, and that comes through in how I compose. Every track has a story too. Sometimes the title comes first, sometimes the feeling does, but there's always something behind it.

I've also built out the rest. remixes - slowed and reverb versions, tuned down to 432hz, designed specifically for sleep, meditation, yoga, and those quieter moments where you need something even softer. It's something I did a lot of research into, and I'm really glad I did.

So that's the honest story of how rest. was born. It came from a real place, a personal one, and I think that's why it keeps meaning so much to me.

rest is productive too. I genuinely believe that.
